NDP MPs and candidates Georgina Jolibois (Desnethé—Missinippi—Churchill River) and Niki Ashton (Churchill—Keewatinook Aski) called today’s ruling from the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal a searing indictment of Liberal and Conservative governments’ failure to make life better for First Nations children.

“Trudeau’s Liberals have shown a consistent pattern of refusing to comply with the Human Rights Tribunal decision to end discrimination against First Nations children,” said Jolibois. “Justin Trudeau should listen to the Assembly of First Nations, Dr. Cindy Blackstock, and the voices of First Nations parents and children who have been calling for change for decades and accept this decision. First Nations children and their families have suffered enough.”

The tribunal ordered the government to pay compensation to First Nations children apprehended by child and family services agencies, as well as their families. The NDP calls on the Trudeau government to comply with the ruling instead of spending more public funds to fight Indigenous children in court.

“The fact that the Liberals have been fighting First Nations children in court is sickening,” said Ashton. “There must be an end to these colonial attitudes and policies that only result in greater marginalization of First Nations youth. First Nations youth deserve justice, not a government pushing them down. 'Real Change' shouldn't be court ordered.”

The NDP’s New Deal for People will fully implement Jordan’s Principle and honour the call for a Spirit Bear Plan to end inequalities in services that Indigenous children face in this country. New Democrats will also take immediate action to respect, support and resource Indigenous jurisdiction over child welfare systems.
