It’s time to end the discrimination against First Nations children

SOUTH INDIAN LAKE – Today, the NDP condemned Trudeau’s Liberals for their decision to challenge, once again, the Human Rights Tribunal ruling to compensate First Nations children for years of discrimination in government funding.

"Liberal and Conservative governments have consistently discriminated against First Nations children but many thought this Prime Minister would be different," said NDP candidate Niki Ashton (Churchill—Keewatinook Aski). "Today is another reminder that he isn't. Whether it's child welfare or pipelines, Justin Trudeau needs to stop fighting First Nations in court."

On Friday, the government announced that it would seek a judicial review of the landmark September 6th ruling, ordering the federal government to pay $40,000 to each child apprehended from homes and communities under the on-reserve welfare system.

Andrew Scheer said a Conservative government would also seek a judicial review.

“Although Trudeau's Liberals boast about their commitment to reconciliation, they continue to violate the human rights of little children living on reserve," added NDP candidate Leah Gazan (Winnipeg Centre). "This government has spent 25 billion dollars on corporate welfare, while children continue to suffer. It is time for Liberals to stop racially discriminating against First Nations children and immediately pay what they owe."
