Liberals' Failure to Eliminate Poverty in our North is Deplorable: Niki Ashton

LAC BROCHET – The NDP announced its plan to tackle poverty in Canada as part of a New Deal for People.

Today, NDP candidate Niki Ashton (Churchill—Keewatinook Aski) called the failure of Trudeau's Liberals to eliminate poverty in Northern Manitoba, deplorable.

“In our North, many live in third world conditions,” said Ashton. “From mould-infested homes to the absence of the most basic infrastructure – it's clear that Liberal and Conservative governments turned their backs on our communities. We now know that eliminating poverty was never their priority.”

A report released last year by Campaign 2000 showed that Churchill—Keewatinook Aski was the riding with the highest rate of child poverty in Canada. Nearly two-thirds of children live in poverty in Northern Manitoba, particularly First Nations. Instead of lifting people out of poverty, Trudeau's Liberals helped their corporate friends and the very richest to avoid taxes and hide billions offshore every year - money that could be used to invest in northern infrastructure.

“The NDP is proposing a New Deal to tackle poverty in our North and across our riding,” added Ashton. “We have a plan to end homelessness, bring social housing to communities, reform the Nutrition North program, ensure better access to mental health and addiction support and invest in recreational infrastructure.”
