NDP Will Bring Maternity Health Services To Our North

FLIN FLON – Today, NDP candidates Georgina Jolibois (Desnethé—Missinippi—Churchill River) and Niki Ashton (Churchill—Keewatinook Aski) announced that an NDP government will reopen the Flin Flon maternity ward. The NDP will also work closely with the provinces to fix staffing gaps, improve wait times, and ensure access to primary care for people giving birth in the North.

"People who need reproductive health care in our North have the same right to bring a child into the world in safety and comfort as people in big cities," said Ashton. "But the effects of underfunding and understaffing are leaving northerners behind. New Democrats will fight for access to maternity health services in our North."

The closure of the Flin Flon maternity ward is an example of how people are left scrambling to find a safe place to give birth. After losing their obstetrician, they haven't been able to fill the position, forcing northerners to deliver over a hundred kilometres away in The Pas. People giving birth in Northern Saskatchewan are also expected to travel a long distance to Prince Albert or Saskatoon to get the care they need instead of staying in their communities.

"It is about choices," said Jolibois. "We can invest in the North to make sure we have the facilities and services people need. But Liberals and Conservatives refuse to do the right thing for Northerners. Neglecting people's health and wellbeing is not how New Democrats do it. We believe that we can make sure families, seniors, people who suffer from chronic illness or injury get the care they need."

New Democrats will stand up for women who live in northern and rural communities. We'll also support the expansion of midwifery services to bring family-centred birth back into Northern communities. New Democrats will also fight for better access to a full range of reproductive and maternal health services in all regions.

"I am proud to stand with strong Northern women like Georgina and Niki to fight for healthcare in our North. We need a federal government that will step up for Northern families. People who give birth need access to reproductive and maternal health services close to home. We need representatives like Georgina and Niki who fight for us and our region."
