Niki Ashton's statement: Orange Shirt Day
On Orange Shirt Day, we commemorate survivors of Residential Schools. A colonial and genocidal system that forcibly removed First Nations, Metis and Inuit children from their families and communities in our North and across the country.
A day to remember that every child matters, that across this country, First Nations children still don't receive equal education funding, that the Government is still fighting First Nations children in court, that far too many children are being ripped from their families, that too many families don't have adequate housing or clean drinking water, that there's still so much more we can do.
On this Orange Shirt Day, let us commit to standing with First Nations children in the pursuit of justice.
