We Must Answer the Call of Climate Strikers with Real Climate Action: Niki Ashton
EASTERVILLE – Today, NDP candidate Niki Ashton (Churchill—Keewatinook Aski) expressed her solidarity with the hundreds of thousands of climate strikers who took to the streets across Canada. They’re calling on their government to finally start taking action to address the imminent climate crisis.
“People in our North can no longer wait, they need a government that will take the climate crisis seriously,” said Ashton. “One day, Trudeau declared a climate emergency and the next day, he approved a pipeline. We cannot trust him to fight the climate crisis – and the Conservatives refuse to recognize that we are in the midst of a climate crisis.”
While Liberals bend the rules to let big polluters off the hook, New Democrats announced a New Deal for Climate Action and Good Jobs that will ensure workers and communities in Northern Manitoba reap the benefits of the clean economy of the future. The NDP’s bold plan would create jobs, help distribute Manitoba’s clean power to other provinces, and make sure that Indigenous communities are full and equal partners in Canada’s efforts to confront the climate crisis.
“Climate leaders don’t buy pipelines,” added Ashton. “Just because the Liberals and the Conservatives refuse to take bold action to fight the climate crisis doesn’t mean that Canada has to sit idly by. Young climate activists like Autumn Peltier are calling on us to become a champion for the environment. More than ever, it is now critical to heed their call.”
